Stories drawn in thread.
Katha is a centuries-old embroidery tradition rooted in Bengal, where simple running stitches transform cloth into richly textured works of art.
Built slowly, stitch by stitch, its beauty comes from rhythm rather than perfect repetition. Floral forms, flowing lines and intricate motifs emerge through thread, giving each piece a character that feels both expressive and deeply personal.
Once associated with the thoughtful reuse and layering of cloth, Katha has evolved across generations into a distinctive decorative art , carried today onto silks, garments and textiles while retaining the unmistakable touch of the hand.
Stitch by stitch.
A tradition lives on.

From the Tarangeeta ArchivePast and present Katha pieces illustrating the breadth of the craft.
From simple stitches,
patterns emerge.
A single running stitch may be simple. Repeated by hand, it becomes line, texture and form.
Stitches follow and fill motifs, building rhythm across the silk. Some compositions are restrained; others become richly layered fields of flowers, foliage and traditional forms.
The slight variations are part of the character of handwork , evidence of a process guided by the hand rather than mechanical repetition.

Small, repeated stitches create line, texture and movement.
Stitches build flowers, foliage, fish and other forms.
